ABOUT THE BOOK

We live in a time of mass information and rampant confusion. Regardless of the theology you embrace, the vocation you pursue, or the politics you espouse, to live in the world today is to feel the swarm of conflicting information touted as truth. I wrote this book to describe my view of the landscape of truth and falsehood, including examples from my life, and to offer what I have learned as a result. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, my thoughts on finding truth draw heavily from this theological backdrop. A key doctrine of the Church is that God has made truth available from a variety of sources that include different religions, science, personal experience, and so forth. I wholeheartedly believe this.

To those who do not share my religious beliefs and decide to venture into this book, I trust you will find more similarities than you may at first anticipate. You will also get some insight into how I, as a deeply religious member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and  as a dedicated scientist and professor, personally navigate faith and science amidst the noise and pressures of the world.  

I have experienced the thrill of discovering truth and the confusion of finding contradictions in all aspects of my life. My hope is that something learned through my struggles may provide help for another who is wrestling with their own uncertainty or doubt.

It is perfectly acceptable—and even likely—that you may have different views than those I share on any topic discussed in this book. None of our differences needs to compromise this one principle: we are all doing our best to navigate a world of distractions and confusion in search of truth. The journey is best when we respect each other as fellow travelers, appreciating differences without depreciating the value of those who hold them.
